Insurance Gyan: Human Life Value

Human Life Value (HLV) in Insurance
Human Life Value (HLV) is the estimated economic value of a person's life, used to calculate the amount of life insurance coverage needed to replace their income and support their dependents in the event of their passing.
Calculation of Human Life Value
The HLV calculation takes into account the following factors:
  1. Income: The person's annual income
  2. Expenses: The person's annual expenses, including debt repayment, living expenses, and other financial obligations
  3. Dependents: The number of dependents, such as family members or others who rely on the person's income
  4. Life Expectancy: The person's expected lifespan, based on age, health, and other factors
  5. Inflation: The expected rate of inflation, to account for the decreasing purchasing power of money over time
The most common method to calculate HLV is the Income Replacement Method, which is:
HLV = (Annual Income x Number of Years of Income Replacement) + (Outstanding Loans and Expenses - Savings)
Example
Suppose a 35-year-old person with an annual income of ₹500,000 has a spouse and two children (dependents). They have an outstanding home loan of ₹1,000,000 and annual expenses of ₹200,000. Assuming a life expectancy of 30 years and an inflation rate of 6%, their HLV would be:
HLV = (₹500,000 x 30) + (₹1,000,000 - ₹200,000) = ₹16,000,000
This means that the person's life is worth ₹16,000,000 in terms of the economic value they provide to their dependents.
Keep in mind that this is a simplified example, and the actual calculation may vary based on individual circumstances and insurance company guidelines. It's always a good idea to consult with a licensed insurance professional to determine the appropriate HLV for your specific situation.
